Living in the small town of Campbell, Minnesota, Maura and Ben Walker - a bank manager and a county recreation supervisor respectively, and former high school sweethearts - have two offspring, daughter Lacey who is away at college and son Adam who is just about to head off to college, which would make Maura and Ben empty nesters after he leaves. Outwardly, they are a tight knit family. Although Maura and Ben still love each other, they have always been different personalities with different interests - he a conservative baseball fanatic, she a more adventurous lover of the arts - and are drifting apart in almost every aspect of their lives, neither wanting to acknowledge it but dreading the fact that they won't have Adam as a focus in their lives and as such a buffer between them. They agree that Maura should accept a prestigious temporary six week secondment to the bank's head office in Minneapolis. That temporary position becomes permanent if Maura wants it. While Maura sees it as something she's worked for for her entire career and thus wants them to move to Minneapolis permanently, Ben doesn't like change, and despite being a state employee who can transfer, doesn't want to move to the big city where there are currently no open positions anyway. If she does so, it could also make Spencer's name in the sport as a coach. What Spencer did not anticipate in taking the job is having to deal with Nikki's stereotypical stage mother, Mia Lee, who believes she knows what's best for Nikki in all aspects of her skating. Spencer knows of Emily from her skating days, and seeing her skate again asks two things of her (in order): to be his co-coach for Nikki as a trusted person in her life; and for him to be her coach, he who believes she as talented a skater now as she was eight years ago and could be a force at the regionals. As Emily discloses why she stopped competing, she ultimately accepts both of Spencer's offers. As she starts to train again, Emily faces some of the same struggles she had in the past, including needing to make a living to put food on the table. But each of Emily, Spencer and Nikki, beyond wanting to do what's right for each of them, truly want what's best for the other two. Others external to three may have other thoughts, some who do not want to see Emily back as competition. The situation gets more complicated as an attraction starts to form between Emily and Spencer.

Although Connor has been able to keep his name in the business writing what have ended up being album filling songs for other artists, he needs a bona fide hit to keep on the A-list. As such, his manager is able to convince Duke and his manager that the two of them should enter into a one time song writing collaboration, that song for Duke to premier at his upcoming appearance at the Silverado Fall Music Festival. While that agreed to collaboration ends up not coming to pass again due to bad blood, Connor, in needing that hit, offers to write a song which Duke can use or not at his discretion at the festival and as a track on his next album. In Silverado, Connor meets Shayna Judson, on whose father Jeremy Judson's property, White Star Ranch, the festival will be held. Shayna has just returned home after a music career in Nashville never got off the ground, including a recent audition with Duke's manager to be one of his backup singers on his upcoming album and tour. Believing that she has talent, Connor is able to convince Shayna to enter into that songwriting collaboration with him, he feeling he needing a set of fresh eyes, ears and thus perspective. As Shayna may be on the cusp of her own breakthrough with this opportunity and beyond as Duke swoops into town, she may face some choices between that breakthrough, which Duke too can see happening, and her personal friendships, much like those choices Duke and Connor made that led to their estrangement.

Conversely, Stratosphere wants this acquisition to have one of the most respected family-owned boutique wineries under its umbrella. The Stratosphere representative who will lead the negotiations is Seth Anderson, a city boy who knows nothing about wines, but knows business, he coming back with a deal which is a prerequisite to a promotion to VP. Chloe doesn't dislike Seth per se but wouldn't trust anyone in his position where the deal would be all about business and nothing about the passion behind the wine. While butting heads with Seth, Chloe begins an increasing flirtation of sorts with whoever is renting the Grange family cottage, the person who has taken it upon himself to do minor repairs around the cottage. The renter and Chloe leave each other messages on the kitchen blackboard, the renter signing his messages "handyman" and Chloe signing her messages "in need of repair". What Chloe does not know is that "handyman" is actually Seth, who in turn does not know that "in need of repair" is Chloe. In this situation, both Chloe and Seth may come to a realization of what they consider important in life, for Chloe also including what her next career move should be, which may not be as easy to achieve as just wanting it.

Gabby, a guardian angel, often gets too involved in her work in that she is not supposed intervene in people's lives directly, which she does, but rather just guide, she warned time and again by her boss, Michael, that those direct interventions inhibit the free will for them to decide their own fates. Deep down, Gabby gets involved in truly wanting to know the human feeling of extreme happiness she often sees in the people she guides, especially wanting to know the human feeling of love. Michael gives her a slightly broader and very special next assignment this Christmas season: to help bring the Christmas spirit back to the town of Angels Falls, which may exhibit the outward accouterments of Christmas but not have the inherent spirit of the holiday. Michael has a leg up on getting Gabby the position of volunteer coordinator at St. Andrew's United Church in town. On the job, Gabby learns that the town used to be filled with Christmas spirit until the town's paper mill closed leading to a downturn in the local economy and people focusing on their own needs to survive, meaning that people have also stopped volunteering. Ultimately Gabby decides to do for the entire town what she was hired to do for the church, which is to bring back the old Christmas traditions that no longer occur, with the largest piece of the puzzle to reopen what is now the closed community center, which closed solely due to structural issues with the building and no money to fix them. In getting that and other Christmas jobs done, Gabby has to tap into the many personal stories of Angel Falls in discovering how each person lost his or her Christmas spirit. The one person who still does seem to be filled with that spirit is Jack Avery, the volunteer fire department chief, and the owner/operator of the local hardware store. Gabby, however, discovers something about Jack's past which may taint the way she deals with him on this project. Through it all, she still has to discover why this assignment is so special as Michael coined it, which may affect her post assignment life in not wanting to leave Angel Falls and understanding that the feeling she has been having is love for Jack in particular.

Up for a promotion, Chicago-based designer, divorcee Danielle Prescott, is a workaholic in trying to eke out a better life for her adolescent son, Paul Prescott. For the first time in years, they are returning to her hometown of Holly Pines for Christmas - she regardless taking work with her - as in the intervening year her father Walter Prescott passed away, she not having had the opportunity to say her goodbyes to him last Christmas. As such, Danielle wants to hand down their family's Holly Pines Christmas traditions to Paul, including taking him to the town's Christmas Festival largely organized by her mother, Kate Prescott. Danielle is dismayed not only to learn that they will have do major fundraising just to hold Festival, but that what what Danielle considers its centerpiece, the miniature train ride, called the North Pole Express for which train enthusiast Walter always acted as conductor, long ceased to operate, no one even knowing what happened to the train itself. In discovering her father's electric toy trains which she wants to have operational for Christmas for Paul, Danielle reconnects with her high school acquaintance, Kevin Vaughn, the owner/operator of the town's hobby shop, he an all 'round fix-it guy. In connecting, they decide to try and locate the North Pole Express and if they can find it if it can be resurrected for the Festival. While they do locate the equipment, it will take what Kevin considers a Christmas miracle for it to be up and running for the Festival, especially as no one makes parts for it anymore. In the process, Danielle and Kevin start to fall for each other. Their path to a relationship faces many hurdles, not only of the outcome of the North Pole Express, but also Danielle's life in Chicago in this possible promotion, and Kevin's ex-girlfriend, Jackie, who operates the florist shop next to Kevin's shop, making it clear individually to both Kevin and Danielle that she wants to get back together with him.
