James Shannon III (Chris O'Donnell) is seeing his single friends get married one by one. He isn't too worried until his girlfriend Anne Arden (Renée Zellweger) catches the bouquet at his friend Marco's (Artie Lange's) wedding. Suddenly, his wild mustang days are numbered. He finally decides to propose to her, but he sticks his foot in his mouth and botches the proposal. Being insulted by the defeatist proposal, Anne leaves town on an assignment. After she's gone, he finds out that his recently-deceased granddad James Shannon's (Sir Peter Ustinov's) will stipulates that he gets nothing of a multi-million-dollar fortune unless he's married by 6:05 p.m. on his 30th birthday: tomorrow. Not being able to find Anne, Jimmie begins backtracking through his past girlfriends to find a wife.

Goofy Canadian screwup Bob Tree goes trough the yellow pages alphabetically to pick jobs, applies and messes them up every time. In the B's, he arrived at butler and takes a wacky crash-course with the somewhat odd Mr. Butler. Bob gets hired, but really more as babysitter cum housekeeper for Jacques, his fuzzy lover Anne Jamieson and, most of all, her spoiled-rotten kids Bates and Tess, terrible handfuls which his unorthodox methods may at least take by surprise.

Gemma and Will are shattered when their son dies in an accident. Gemma blames herself and starts to have panic attacks that affect her eyesight - her point of view is viscerally shared with the audience. At the same time, Will believes he is hearing his son's voice calling out to him. To escape their grief, Gemma suggests they take up a new acquaintance Paul's offer to stay at his Lake District country getaway. Gemma, helped by ex-pharmacist Paul, tries to stop her panic attacks with medication. Will, believing in the supernatural continued presence of his lost son, returns home to be with him. This leaves Gemma alone with Paul who appears to be developing genuine feelings for her welfare. Love, grief, and the frailty of the human condition are all brought to the fore as Gemma Will and Paul are caught up in a descent into violence, first psychological and ultimately physical.
