A lonely boy discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a sea creature of Scottish legend.

A shy boy named Willie is unable to make friends in Yazoo City, Mississippi in 1942, until his parents give him a puppy for his ninth birthday. The puppy, which he names Skip, becomes well known and loved throughout the community and enriches Willie's life as he grows into manhood.

Winnie Foster has everything a young woman could desire. She comes from a well-bred, wealthy, and respected family. She dresses in the finest clothes and is afforded every opportunity to refine herself. But Winnie finds that the heat of summer is not nearly as stifling as her gilded cage. She longs for freedom, for adventure.
