The Grinch
HDFor their eighth fully animated feature, Illumination and Universal Pictures present The Grinch, based on Dr. Seuss' beloved holiday classic. The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl's generous holiday spirit. Funny, heartwarming, and visually stunning, it's a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Whoville when he runs out of food. Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter, and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides to pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh. Meanwhile, down in Whoville, Cindy-Lou Who (Cameron Seely), a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer, plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch's more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus? Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos' holiday cheer once and for all?

Mila's take on the problem is that Izzi has made Desmond an unrealistic version of a romantic character in being "perfect", which matches Izzi's own unrealistic pursuit of a man. With Mila unwilling to push the final deadline past Christmas Eve--less than a week away--as Izzi requests, Izzi is able to convince her to let her work on the necessary edits from the Antler Lodge in Silver Springs. Since her parents moved to Florida, Izzi, a winter-wonderland traditionalist in her view of the perfect Christmas, has found the Lodge her Christmas home away from home, especially as its proprietor Bob is as much a traditionalist as she is. The only reason Mila allows this working vacation is that Bob informed Izzi that he's retiring and selling the lodge so it may not be the same retreat next year. When she arrives, she learns that he sold it to his son Matt, a widower of three years, who wanted to moves himself and his adolescent daughter Kacey back to Silver Springs for family reasons after moving a large hotel in Seattle. What immediately strikes Izzi about Matt is that he is the exact image of the paintings of Desmond used for her book covers, and she discovers that nobody associated with the publishing company knows who was originally commissioned for that job. Her thoughts that Matt might be her Desmond quickly dissolve as he displays human flaws, even in basic maintenance--he wants to transform the lodge into what she sees as against her Christmas sensibility. As Matt and Izzi spend more time together, and Matt himself discovers the issue of the book-cover likeness and knowing the reason behind it, Izzi starts to see in Matt the true nature of what Desmond should be, while Matt begins to wonder if meeting Izzi in this manner is a sign that he is ready to start another romance. to begin a romantic life again. This situation is much like when she left the family business, Silver Investments, where she would probably be Vice-President if she stayed, she leaving in having a disagreement about the company's direction with her father, President Edward Silver, and her stepmother and stepbrother, Katherine and Justin Silver, the latter who has assumed that Vice-Presidency, the three who she has not spoken to since. But in visiting with her sister Eve Silver, Holly believes she was meant not to find the next in the line of jobs she probably would not have wanted, but rather return to the family business in learning that the event devised by her long deceased mother around which the company was built is under threat, namely a Christmas toy giveaway to needy children. This year, they outsourced the organization of the toy giveaway to a professional fundraising company, which unexpectedly went bankrupt, taking with them all the donations for the toys, such information which has not yet reached the media. While the rest of her family believes they should abandon the toy giveaway this year to regroup while strategize about how to deal with the media when it hits the news, Holly is determined to keep to her mother's vision to find a way to have it this year. Her idea involves having a big name with pull to be the center of a fundraising campaign in order to bring in a new set of donors, she suggesting former major league pitcher Jack Kane who she met in a somewhat awkward encounter while she worked at Arthur. Jack would well understand the problems as his own charity was also affected by the same company, he who has instead proactively dealt with the issue in the media to mixed results. While Jack sympathizes with Holly's plight, he is unwilling to be the face of a Christmas campaign in not being a Christmas person in it having bad connotations for him. Holly is able to convince him at least to consider doing it as she acts as Santa's helper elf as she would for the toy giveaway in trying to show him the joys of Christmas. In spending time together in the lead up to the possible fundraiser Holly has planned to feature Jack, the two start to fall for each other as Jack can see Christmas through Holly's eyes. What happens between them is affected by the outcome of fundraiser and the toy giveaway if it happens this year.
'Tis the Season to be Merry
HDMerry Griffin is a relationship expert whose blog, which espouses her checklist of dating rules, has a substantial following. She is parlaying that blog into her first book outlining how those rules have led to her finding her Mr. Right, fiancé Dale Westfield. In this approach to Christmas, the book is being edited by her best friend, Darlene Walters, for Littlefield, the boutique Boston publishing house where she works as a junior editor, it ready to hit the store shelves in time for next Christmas. The problem is is that Dale is not actually her Mr. Right, but someone she encountered briefly in a coffee shop as he was waiting for a blind date, he solely the inspiration for Merry's fantasy love life, something that Darlene knows, but which they learn Darlene's boss, publisher Sonia Hendricks, would have issue with in the reality being what makes Merry's manuscript stand out from the pack. As Darlene and Merry head to Darlene's hometown of Snowbridge, VT for the Christmas holidays to strategize about how they will deal with this problem which was unintentional in Merry just wanting to help people with the book, Sonia beats them to the punch when she tracks them down in Snowbridge in discovering that Dale is not real. As this book could make or break the company which also means Darlene's job, Sonia provides an ultimatum for Merry to come up with another solid book idea before she leaves town just prior to the 25th. What happens with the book and thus Merry's writing career is affected by whether she is able to demonstrate that her rules do lead to a love life, especially as they apply to herself. There are seemingly two potential men that could fill the void as that Mr. Right for Merry, each who has an issue in filling that void. The first is New York restaurateur James Smith, who happens to be Darlene's ex-boyfriend for who Darlene does not want to admit she still has feelings, despite his actions toward Merry. And the second is Darlene's brother, Adam Walters who unexpectedly came back to Snowbridge having long worked overseas doing charity aide work, the latest post in the jungles of Guatemala, while he figured out what he wanted to do with his life. His surprise visit is in part to make a geographic split with his now ex-girlfriend Julie and in part to make that declaration of his professional future: wanting to take over the family business, Walters Gift Shop and Tree Lot, he who would be the fourth generation of Walters to run it. That declaration surprises his and Darlene's parents, as he had never made any indication of wanting to do so before now. The primary issues with Adam and Merry are that they had a mutual attraction in their one and only encounter ten years ago which led to nothing for various reasons, but more importantly that Adam does not believe in any of the checklist items about which Merry writes.

While Steve has managed to eke out a solo career with whatever moderate success solely on the strength of goodwill toward the duo, Mike has retreated from the world in those issues that led to that on-stage incident, that is until now as he has agreed to a televised Christmas reunion show called "Bedford and Sullivan at Big Red", Big Red being the Sullivan family home in the small town of Pineville. Talent manager Dianne Carter, who represents neither Bedford or Sullivan but who has some stake in the show, is asked by the show's producer Troy for some assistance, especially in dealing with Mike who is largely missing-in-action regardless of he having agreed to do the show. In heading back to Pineville, Quinn learns that Steve is currently represented by Jason Bedford, Steve's son and Quinn's childhood friend who Quinn believes exacerbated the problems between their respective fathers in the intervening years. In reconnecting with her father, Quinn learns that both he and Steve need this show to happen for different reasons as Quinn, Jason, Steve and Mike negotiate and renegotiate, the latter especially around Bedford and Sullivan performing arguably their biggest hit for the show, One December Night, a very personal song for Mike and one that has some very painful memories. In the process, Quinn and Jason start to fall for each other, a road to a happily ever after for them threatened by what happens with the show.
