Two Italian families own competitive pizza restaurants and have had an ongoing family feud since long ago in the 'old country'. While Maura sees it as something she's worked for for her entire career and thus wants them to move to Minneapolis permanently, Ben doesn't like change, and despite being a state employee who can transfer, doesn't want to move to the big city where there are currently no open positions anyway. So they decide to try a long distance relationship - married but apart. Everyone around them, including Lacey and Adam, see their experiment as a train wreck waiting to happen, and the start of the break up of the family. Lacey, who is home from college for the summer, decides to move in with her mom, while Adam stays in Campbell with their dad, each keeping an eye out for their respective parent in making sure the family stays together. They believe that other people are waiting in the wings waiting to pounce on the situation, most specifically Ben's coworker Sienna Halvorson who once vied with Maura for Ben's affections when they were in high school, and Thomas Hardison, the suave divorced bank president who loves the arts as she does. But if Maura and Ben are truly going to save their marriage, they have to acknowledge that there is a problem and work to find solutions to those problems.

When he's told that because it's the 4th of July most of their agents are not around so they might have trouble getting people to get the hackers. So he instructs them to get local PD'S to take care of it. And one of the cops they ask is John McClane who is tasked with bringing a hacker named Farrell to the FBI. But as soon as he gets there someone starts shooting at them. McClane manages to get them out but they're still being pursued. And it's just when McClane arrives in Washington that the whole system breaks down and chaos ensues.

All the other boys follow Joe if only out of fear, especially as legend has it that the ring that Joe wears contains poison which will lead to a slow death if injected. The boys get into one misadventure after another as they try to find different places and increasingly disgusting ways to cook the worms before Billy consumes them. But by the end of the day, they all learn that there is strength in numbers in dealing with fear.

As they begin to develop a very unusual respect for each other, the woman's would-be murderers get word that she's still alive and make plans to go finish her off.
