Harry's (Daniel Radcliffe's) fourth year at Hogwarts is about to start and he is enjoying the summer vacation with his friends. They get the tickets to The Quidditch World Cup Final, but after the match is over, people dressed like Lord Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes') "Death Eaters" set a fire to all of the visitors' tents, coupled with the appearance of Voldemort's symbol, the "Dark Mark" in the sky, which causes a frenzy across the magical community. That same year, Hogwarts is hosting "The Triwizard Tournament", a magical tournament between three well-known schools of magic : Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang. The contestants have to be above the age of seventeen, and are chosen by a magical object called "The Goblet of Fire". On the night of selection, however, the Goblet spews out four names instead of the usual three, with Harry unwittingly being selected as the Fourth Champion. Since the magic cannot be reversed, Harry is forced to go with it and brave three exceedingly difficult tasks.

Harry is snatched away from his mundane existence by Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), the groundskeeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown into a world completely foreign to both him and the viewer. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted.

Young siblings Abby and Ethan are adopted by outwardly perfect parents Eve and Raymond Goode, only to find that that their new guardian's remote mansion is far from the idyllic abode that it initially appears to be.

One day, while Solange is studying sheep-shaped dust formations in her apartment, the doorbell rings. A deliveryman claims to have a package for her. Solange is formal in her response: That's impossible. The deliveryman insists, and miss understanding ensues. Solange collapses. After asking questions about her social and personal life, a doctor suggests that someone watch over Solange at night. her landlord, who drove her to see the doctor devotes himself to the task. Later, remembering his other obligations, he must recruit a new watchman...A veritable human chain is put into place to prevent Solange from being left alone. This relational therapy seems beneficial.

In Boulder, Colorado, Grady, who comes from an old money family but who has struck out on his own as a half owner of a fly fishing business, has just unexpectedly passed. Beyond her extreme grief, Gray, his loving fiancée, the two who were to be married in only a couple of days, is placed in a difficult position as they had no assets in their joint names, and without a will she is legally left with nothing of his except the engagement ring, one half of a family heirloom set along with the wedding ring she was about to receive, the engagement ring which his mother, Ellen, would like back. Gray cannot even afford to live in the rental house she and Grady were to live in, and as such, she, at least in the short term, moves into Grady's old room with his two roommates and best friends, Dennis, Grady's quiet, straight-laced business partner, and somewhat clueless Sam, a copywriter of sorts with Celestial Seasonings Tea. The fourth in that buddy friendship is Fritz, a Los Angeles based director of commercials, he who came in for the funeral and who is staying with Dennis, Sam and now Gray for as long as he is in town. Gray has never much liked seemingly self-absorbed Fritz, his current presence which only strengthens that notion as he displays no sense of anything about Grady, let alone grief. In the process of dealing with his estate, Gray discovers some hidden aspects of what was Grady's recent life, both of a financial nature and an associated personal nature. She turns in part to Grady's friends for answers and support, and while Dennis is the one who wishes she turned to in being secretly in love with her, Gray ends up bonding unexpectedly with Fritz as this information answers a lot of questions she had about his and Grady's friendship. Things within this grouping get even more complicated with the arrival into town from Los Angeles of a woman named Maureen and her preschool aged son Mattie, who are somewhat in the center of that hidden issue concerning Grady.

On the surface, Meg and Tom Davidson are in a happy marriage. There is, however, an underlying tension between the two because of Meg's part-time job as a real estate agent, which was originally only supposed to fill in her down time as a stay-at-home mom caring for their infant daughter, Ellie. Because of how successful she is at her job, Meg, on the urging of her boss George, is contemplating taking the broker's course and getting her broker's license, leading to a full time job. Tom, a lawyer, deep down would rather Meg return to being a full time stay at home mom and wife. What he sees as this neglect is only part of the reason why Tom has embarked on an affair with a younger woman named Lisa Carver. However, Tom, who really does love Meg, decides to break it off with Lisa. Lisa does not take this news well. Although Tom is aware of the telephone calls and other attempts she makes to contact him, he is unaware that Lisa is emotionally unstable, as she will do whatever she needs to to get Tom back. Stevie, Lisa's lowlife of a former boyfriend, decides to help Lisa get back at Tom in an effort for him to get Lisa back, which includes using violent tactics. He does so despite knowing Lisa will lie to get what she wants. Meanwhile, Meg comes to realization that Tom is hiding things from her, the extent of those secrets which she is unaware. She is also unaware that Tom's actions not only may break up their marriage but puts Tom and her life in danger.

In Los Angeles, a story about a dead girl, told in five chapters. A woman, miserable in her circumscribed life caring for her domineering mother, finds a body. Somehow, this discovery allows her to change. At the morgue, the sister of a girl missing for 15 years believes the body is that of her sister; this liberates her. An older woman, married to a man who pays her little attention, finds evidence in a storage unit; how will she handle it? The mother of the dead girl, who left home some years before, visits the last place her daughter lived and makes her own discoveries. Last, we flash back to the victim's final day.

In this midquel of the original The Fox and the Hound (1981), Tod and Copper are drawn toward a local carnival. Among these attractions is a group of singing dogs, who hope to one day make it to the Grand Ole Opry. Along the way, Tod and Copper's friendship is tested as they spend so much time away from each other. Hopefully, they'll make amends before facing this challenge again in the original film.

Norman Oppenheimer is the President of New York based Oppenheimer Strategies. His word-of-mouth business is consulting work largely in American-Israeli business and politics, that focus due to being Jewish. Most of that work is as a fixer: doing work that others don't want to do and with which they don't want to be officially associated. In reality, Norman is a shyster, and not a very good one at that. His office is comprised of his cell phone and whatever is stuffed in his satchel which is usually slung over his shoulder as he wanders the streets. What he promises is making connections, setting up a meeting between his guy and the other guy. Generally, "his guy" is non-existent, he dropping names of people he usually doesn't know to make connections. A usual tactic he uses is to say that his deceased wife was personally connected to so-and-so, such as being a babysitter, those stories always untrue. All he needs is for one of the people that he approaches to believe a story to build that network. Not so much a story, but an act of kindness with that ulterior motive does eventually pan out as the connection of which he could have only dreamed. He is able to build off that connection to become the toast of the town, a status upon which he tries to parlay into being an even bigger fish in the pond. But the greater his exposure, the greater the potential scrutiny about him as a person, which could bring his fragile network come crumbling down around him.
