With the care to Lily not only the necessities of life, which Ben could handle on his own, but also to maintain some stability in her life by embarking on what were Lily's mother's holiday traditions, Ben requests Peyton's help in he never having had any traditions associated with Christmas. This time with Lily throws a wrench into what both Peyton and Ben had planned in the lead up to Christmas. Wanting to move into event planning, Peyton convinced her parents to let her organize this year's twenty-fifth anniversary Canaday Inn Christmas Eve party, which for all those years has been Birch Creek's event of the Christmas season. Peyton wants to make her mark by making this the best party ever, especially as the Gazette newspaper is planning to feature it on the front page of its Christmas edition. While she has been able to cross all the t's and dot all the i's in being detailed oriented, the one thing Peyton has not been able to do with one week to go is the big picture item of coming up with the party theme, the secret which she's kept behind the locked doors of the inn's still empty ballroom. Ben, when hearing about Ford, was just about to catch a plane to spend Christmas in Honduras for a "vacation", with only his father knowing the real reason being in going for an interview for a three year contract to work at Doctor's Care International's field clinic there, they who need a doctor on the ground the beginning of the new year. In spending time together with Lily, Peyton and Ben become friends once again with the possibility of more, especially if Ben divulges the real reason he didn't say anything to her ten years ago. But they will still have to overcome their different life paths, Peyton in what she hopes will be her new event planning career, and Ben in his medical work in Honduras, much like the altruistic decisions both his parents have made in their lives.

Lindsey will have time to mull both proposals over as she is taking a week long trip to Paris with her 18-year-old daughter Alexa Wilson (Jocelyn Hudon), who is following in her mother's footsteps in taking a semester in the art program at the Sorbonne under Hugo Blanchet (Bruce Davison), who was Lindsey's mentor when she was a student there. Lindsey, who has not been to Paris in 20 years since she was a student, hopes that Alexa will not follow in another of her Paris footsteps, namely falling in love while she's there. Lindsey fell in love with an American named Jack Burrow (Jerry O'Connell), the son of a businessman whose primary holdings were in Europe, Jack who broke her heart by not following her back to the States following her art studies. A symbolic aspect of that heartbreak was that the lock they were going to affix to one of the bridges over the Seine to signify their love accidentally fell into the river instead. Soon after Lindsey and Alexa's arrival in Paris, Lindsey runs into Jack. Although their meeting is a surprise to both of them, it is not as accidental as it first appears. Although he is dating a woman named Nicole who is a bit more advanced in the relationship than him, Jack quickly falls in love with Lindsey all over again, he hesitant to tell her so because of what happened 20 years ago and the fact that they currently live in two different established worlds. Alexa meeting and falling in love with Jean-Paul (Benjamin Sutherland), a bellboy at their hotel who is also a student at the Sorbonne, and their encounters with a recently widowed British tourist named Kathryn Daltry, who is in Paris for the first time without who was her long time husband, may factor into what happens between Lindsey and Jack. But the biggest factor may be the arrival in Paris of Trent, who, beyond the issue of work and the magazine, takes measures to sweep Lindsey off her feet.

Meanwhile, Kristie's ten year widowed mother, Barb Simmons, the owner/operator of the beach-side café, has been receiving romantic gifts from a secret admirer in the lead up to Valentine's Day, the only indication of his identity being he revealing he one of her regular customers. Barb has to decide if there is a possible second chance of romance in her life, something she had long thought not.

In prison Peter hears about the Wolfenden committee which, partly in response to public sympathy for the harsh treatment of gay men, is seeking to change the law and, on release, bravely and openly gives the committee evidence and advice. Nonetheless it will be a decade before homosexuality is decriminalized. As with Channel 4's treatment of the same case in 2007, 'A Very British Sex Scandal', the drama is intercut with interviews with elderly gay men, who, like Peter, suffered discrimination in the 1950s and 1960s.
