Gods and Monsters
HD1957. Long having retired, James Whale, arguably most famous for directing Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935) among some other 1930s horror classics, has burned his bridges with the Hollywood community in that they have abandoned him, the possible exception being his continuing friendship with former lover David Lewis. James had been openly gay even during his working period and is in declining health. Having been recently released from a hospital where he was recuperating from a stroke, he left with some permanent health issues, the aftermath of the stroke. Much against the disapproval of his loyal longtime housekeeper Hanna, his health does not prevent him from toying with the handsome young men who may wander into his midst in his continuing homosexual desires, although Hanna is as much, if not more concerned about any of those young men taking advantage of him in his elderly and fragile state. The young man who catches his eye among the most recent is Clayton Boone, who Hanna had hired to do garden work around the property. Clay, an ex-marine from the proverbial "wrong side of the tracks", has no idea who James was or is before he starts this job. James and Clay soon begin a friendship of sorts. Clay is also unaware of James' homosexual orientation before such is confirmed by Hanna, an issue which threatens his masculinity, especially in light of the cracks showing in his casual sexual relationship with a slightly older and wiser diner waitress named Betty. Clay has to reconcile that threat against being in the company of someone whom he considers an interesting and once famous man. The friendship and his state of health related to the stroke lead James to reflect in a bittersweet vein on key points of his life, most notably serving in WWI, and as a result reveals his ulterior motives through the actions he takes toward Clay.

Elephant Song
HDIt's January, 1966 at St. Christina's Psychiatric Hospital in Northwestern Ontario. Dr. Toby Greene and Nurse Susan Peterson are individually being interviewed by Dr. Craig Jones, one of the hospital's administrators, about the incident that occurred just before Christmas, the day that their colleague, Dr. James Lawrence, inexplicably did not show up for work. As Dr. Lawrence disappeared the day before during a session with one of his regular patients, a young man named Michael Aleen, the belief among some is that Michael may have had something to do with Dr. Lawrence's disappearance. That day, Dr. Greene took over Dr. Lawrence's patient-load, which included a session with Michael to try and discover if he indeed had some nefarious role in Dr. Lawrence's disappearance. Dr. Greene did not know Michael at all, and was unable to read his case file before meeting with Michael. Regardless, Dr. Greene believed he could read Michael and glean as much from his lies as from his truths. Conversely, Miss Peterson was well-acquainted with Michael and his overall mental state. On the surface, Michael seemed to be able to take control of the situation with information he was able to obtain about Dr. Greene and Miss Peterson to play one off the other, as well as information about secrets about the hospital the administrators believed were well hidden. Michael's emotions also came into play in what happened that day, the question being whether either Dr. Greene or Miss Peterson were able to break through those emotions to the core of what was happening with Michael and Dr. Lawrence.

Christmas Song
HDIn New York City, Kasdan Cresswell Academy is the outcome of a just happened merger between an all girls' school with an all boys' school into a coed school. By the start of Kasdan Creswell's first academic term, not all aspects of the merger have been ironed-out. In what was already a threatened music program at both schools, Kasdan's director of music Diana Thiessen and Creswell's director of music Ken Stoddard still have music teaching jobs in the merger running parallel music programs, it not being clear what will happen to either of their jobs based on monetary issues, with the likelihood that both will have jobs by the end of the completed merger low. Diana and Ken already do not see eye to eye on anything music-related, Diana who teaches in an academic fashion primarily of the classics, while Ken wants his students to have free expression of music, his musical teaching bent toward the popular. The easily-stressed school principal, Jessica Gedler, suggests that the two submit their own individual entries to a television sponsored high school Christmas carol contest, the outcome of the contest which would go a long way to convincing the decision makers on who should be the school's music director. The contest is to be a duo singing any Christmas carol in any arrangement. Diana's two female students and Ken's two male students are a disparate bunch: Liz Strait, the girl most like to...; extremely shy Amy Barnes, whose shyness is due to being overprotected by her parents in an effort to shield her from any emotional pain; Billy Warren, the golden boy with an ego large enough to fill a football field; and Carlo, an academically bright student new to the school who is having trouble knowing where to fit in due to being confined to a wheelchair. Because of their differences, it is difficult enough to bring each team together as a cohesive unit, that is until the students learn through the grapevine that their respective teacher's job may be on the line based on the outcome, which leads to the view that the other team is the sworn enemy. Through it all, Diana and Ken are each going through personal issues of their own, specifically in not having an active social life. As hard as they try, they seem not to be able to avoid each other socially, that want to avoid based on most of their conversations ending in a philosophical argument.

Queen & Country
HDThe hilarious highlight of John Boorman's Hope and Glory (1987), nominated for five Oscars: nine-year-old Bill Rohan rejoices in the destruction of his school by an errant Luftwaffe bomb. This movie picks up the story nearly a decade later as Bill (Boorman's alter-ego) (Callum Turner) begins basic training in the early 1950s, during the Korean War. Bill is joined by a trouble-making Army mate Percy (Caleb Landry Jones). They never get near South Korea, but engage in a constant battle of wits with the Catch-22-worthy Sergeant Major Bradley (David Thewlis). Richard E. Grant is their superior, the very infinitely put-upon, aptly-named, Major Cross.
The Beautiful Country
HDOne of the consequences of the U.S.-Viet Nam war was the children of G.I.s by their Viet Namese wives and lovers. For years, women who were involved with U.S. soldiers were social outcasts, treated as collaborators while their children, even when living with grandparents, endured taunts and abuse. This is the story of one such child, Binh, being forced from his village at seventeen years, going to Saigon to find his mother, then trying to escape to the U.S. with his much younger half-brother, Tam, in 1990. The film lingers on the rigors of the voyage: the sampan, the Malaysian detention camps, the illegal refugee ship, and the underground economy with near-slavery in New York City. It then opens up when Binh leaves New York for Houston to find his father.
