On a snowy mid-December night in Covington, ME, a young woman not from town is brought into the hospital unconscious having been pulled from the icy river following an accident on the bridge. Physically all right with only a mild concussion and some minor scrapes and bruises, she nonetheless awakens with a case of retrograde amnesia, more problematic as no one in town knows who she is with all her possessions, including her identification, lost probably somewhere in the river. As Sheriff Crowley investigates, all that is known about her is that she ate at Masie's Diner that evening, Eleanor the waitress who pointed her in the direction of the hotel as a place to stay for the night as she was passing through town. Believing it important in case she came back for it, Eleanor also kept an advertisement the woman inadvertently left at the diner for a tree lighting ceremony on Christmas Eve in Charleston, SC, with the note "Please come -Mark" written on the back.
