In this handsome period piece perfectly suited for cinephiles of all stripes, director Michael Engler (Downton Abbey, 30 Rock, Six Feet Under) and screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Gosford Park) bring a fascinating slice of pre-Hollywood history to light in a coming-of-age story centering on the relationship between the young, free-spirited and soon-to-be international screen starlet Louise Brooks (a riveting, high-intensity Haley Lu Richardson) and her tee-totalling chaperone (a wonderfully nuanced Elizabeth McGovern). On their journey from the conservative confines of Wichita Kansas to the flash and sizzle of New York City, both women are driven by a kindred desire for self-discovery and liberation from the past. Based on the book by Laura Moriarty and anchored by a superb supporting cast (Miranda Otto, Géza Röhrig, and Blythe Danner in a key cameo), The Chaperone is a sensitive, resonant, and illuminating tale of women's lives in the early 20th century.

Recounting the high-profile doping scandal that rocked Major League Baseball, director Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys) takes us into the surreal Miami underworld that provided performance-enhancing drugs to Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and other star players. They say South Florida is a sunny place for shady people and this is certainly true of steroid peddler Anthony Bosch and his most notorious client, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. While Bosch's medical credentials may be lacking, his storytelling skills are first rate as he hilariously details the rise and fall of his "health clinic", including mob connections, financial chicanery, his cocaine habit, and Rodriguez's eccentric behavior. The documentary plays like a madcap Floridian crime comedy in the vein of Elmore Leonard or the Coen Brothers while it raises serious questions about the ethics of professional sports. Powerful interests would be happy to let this story slip from memory, but Screwball makes it unforgettable.

As such, Alfred Roncalli, Valentine's brother, wants Teodora to sell the property, which would probably be worth millions, and shut down the business, something that both Teodora and Valentine are resisting despite the financial problems. Teodora and Valentine may be able to get the business out of their financial hole when one of Valentine's shoes are noticed by Rhedd Lewis, the powerful head buyer for a chain of upscale boutiques, she who asks Valentine to submit a pair of shoes for specific wedding gown in a competition among the major shoe companies, the winning pair to be featured in the boutique window. Concurrently, Valentine herself, against what she would consider the odds in not being her own idea of the perfect woman, catches the eye of Roman Falcone, an up and coming executive chef at an upscale neighborhood Italian restaurant. And that's why Wes doesn't want to tell Lindsey that he has been offered a job on a nine-month tour with with a rock singer by the manager (Brian Robinson) Lindsey brought in to watch them perform in hoping to sign them or at least her as an act. When their last gig of the year just days before Christmas is canceled at the last minute, leaving Lindsey without sufficient funds for a flight to head to her hometown just outside of Akron for Christmas, more important this year with her sister Allie (Whitney Palmer) due with her first baby just on the other side of New Year's--Wes, just learning that he grew up in a neighboring town from her and too wants to head home for the holidays, suggests that they make what would be the 15-hour straight-through drive together. With the thought of not being home for Christmas the only thing worse than spending 15 hours with Wes, Lindsey, with no other option, reluctantly agrees. On the road trip, they hit one detour after another--some agreed upon, some bad circumstances--which in combination may threaten them making it to their respective homes for Christmas. But in the process, they have to spend extra time together, which allows them truly to get to know and fall for each other, one of the questions being if they can admit that to themselves and to each other. The situation is further complicated by Wes' upcoming new job on tour without her.

Anne Garrison's job as head toy buyer for Sinclair's chain of department stores headquartered in New York City is much different than her toy experience growing up at her father Bill Garrison's shop, Garrison's Toys in North Bay, Maine. While what she buys for Sinclair's is mostly high tech, Garrison's primarily sells Bill's own crafted wooden toys, Anne who learned how to carve as a child but who has put that part of her life behind her. While she has spent a few days in North Bay around Christmas Day most years, she is heading back three weeks before Christmas this year as Bill is retiring and she is helping him at the store for this final Christmas before clearing it out to sell the property, with the plan being for him to move to Connecticut to be closer to both Anne and her sister. His original want was for Anne to take over the business. The store is not the only thing that might be closing in town as Dorothy Wentzell, the perceived cold-hearted owner of the town's largest employer Wentzell Lumber Mill, is thinking about selling and retiring as well, whoever the new owners of the property who will probably not keep it as a mill. The mill's General Manager, Keith McClain, moved to town following the passing of his wife so that his now ten year old daughter would have extra family in the form of Keith's sister-in-law Patty and her husband Sean. Keith would like to save the mill not only for his own sake - he not wanting to uproot Jessie again - but also for all his employees. Anne and Keith end up spending time together as they are wrangled into chairing the town's annual Christmas festivities: the tree lighting and silent auction, the Christmas carnival, and the Christmas pageant held on Christmas Eve. While Anne's high school boyfriend Tom Novak reenters her life in being the real estate agent handling the sale of the store, a mutual but unspoken attraction seems to be forming between Anne and Keith, especially as Anne is additionally helping Jessie with her solo in the pageant. While many things are up in the air for anything to happen between Anne and Keith - Anne heading back to New York potentially never to return to town with the sale of the store, and Keith possibly having to move if the mill property is sold - a set of themed wooden Santas that Anne carved just before she went away to college may play a part, those Santas which seem to be providing much needed inspiration to its recipients.
