15-year-old aspiring singer/songwriter Headly Henderson and her widowed mother René Henderson, co-owner of René and Lou's Bistro, have been the focus of each other's lives since René's husband/Headly's father Michael Henderson died suddenly in a tragic accident five years ago. The two do everything together. But as Headly is getting to the age where she may want some "boy" time of her own, especially as Bodie Miller, a childhood friend, has just reentered her life and shows interest, Headly wants her mother to find some love of her own again, which René has resisted if only because Michael was the love of her life. Unable to get René signed up to a dating website without a valid credit card, Headly and her more technologically-adept friend Willis decide to create their own method of online dating with men of their choosing. After they come clean to the three men Headly approaches with the carrot of an "all about René" video, they tell them that they cannot tell René that it was them who set up the date, each date to evolve out of the men being regular customers at the Bistro. Of the three men, there is connection between René and only one of them: Andrew, a widowed single father. To get to a happy ending, René and Andrew both have many obstacles to overcome such as the memories of their respective first marriages, and what it means to be back in the dating pool after their relationship experiences, especially at their stage in life. Meanwhile, Headly herself may have a bumpy road to her first real romance, with she perhaps not being able to see past Bodie's good looks for the mismatch that they are, truly to see that her first real love may have been staring her in the face for years, if she can get over the geeky persona--including a bad haircut and unstylish eyeglasses--and friendship as the surface characteristics.

With Trish's arrival back in town, Laura, in a rare act of defiance with a last-straw issue with the family, decides to hang out with Trish for a girls' day off to pamper themselves, which for Laura is easier said than done. Laura's arrival home at the end of the day to find that nothing has changed leads to her, at the last minute, taking Trish up on an offer to accompany her on a weekend business trip to a resort to meet with the resort's owner, client Don Holland. On a Friday near the end of her medical leave, Sandra learns of this situation from her friend and co-worker Juliette after the "show of hands" vote is held, the result a 13-3 decision for the bonuses over Sandra's job. Because Juliette knows Jean-Marc, who is determined to get rid of Sandra, influenced the vote by scare mongering through misinformation, Juliette and Sandra, at the end of the working day on Friday, are able to convince Dumont to hold another secret ballot on Monday morning, with Sandra needing a majority to keep her job, meaning nine votes. By Saturday morning, Sandra's supportive husband, Manu, convinces her that over the weekend she should speak to each and all of the thirteen who voted for the bonuses to get them to change their minds. The Byas not only need the income from Sandra's job but Manu believes the job is a symbol for Sandra of her own self worth, important now in her tenuous mental state. As Sandra reluctantly goes about this task, she finds that not only is she uncomfortable being in this somewhat confrontational situation, but that the people who voted against her have their own household conflicts over their own EUR1,000, which would keep some of them afloat financially. As the weekend progresses, Sandra will find if she is strong enough emotionally to deal with the situation.

Forty-six year old Diane Després - "Die" - has been widowed for three years. She institutionalized him shortly following her husband's death due to Steve's attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and his violent outbursts. He was just kicked out of the latest in a long line of facilities for setting fire to the cafeteria, in turn injuring another boy. She made this decision to deinstitutionalize him as she didn't like the alternative, sending him into more restrictive juvenile detention from which he would probably never be rehabilitated. However, with this deinstitutionalization, she has to take care of him which means only being able to do home based work. Despite they always yelling expletives at each other and Steve sometimes demonstrating those violent tendencies toward her, Die and Steve truly do love each other, his emotions which are sometimes manifested as an Oedipus complex especially as he seems to need her complete attention most specifically when it is being directed at possible male suitors. Their lives, both individually and as a family, are affected with the entrance of two of their neighbors. The first is Paul, a lawyer, who does have that sexual interest in Die as he tries to help Steve through his legal problems. The second and more important is Kyla, who lives across the street with her husband Patrick and their adolescent daughter, they who are in transit in their life to wherever Patrick's job will take them. Kyla is a high school teacher on sabbatical as she deals with her own emotional issues, which are manifested in stuttering whenever she feels incapable of dealing with her life. Kyla may find that she needs the Després as much as they need her.

The film's central character, Ray (Daniel Craig), has schizophrenia. The story begins with Ray's discharge from psychiatric hospital. Ray's devoted brother Pete (David Morrissey) picks him up and drives Ray to his new abode, the spare room in Pete's West London flat. Pete is a chef who works long hours in the café (a traditional 'greasy spoon' during the day and a trendy eatery in the evening) that he inherited from his father. He now has to find the time to take care of Ray and monitor the medication that controls the voices in his head. Ray is an intelligent, out-going young man. He soon falls for Laura (Kelly Macdonald), a Glaswegian girl in the midst of breaking up with her abusive boyfriend (Peter McDonald). Laura becomes attracted to Ray because of his spontaneity and his childlike sense of fun. Around this time, Pete also becomes involved in a relationship with Mandy (Julie Graham). As Ray's relationship blossoms, he begins to resent taking his pills, preferring to trust in the soothing properties of love. Over time, this decision has disastrous effects on all three relationships: the relationship between the brothers, Ray and Laura, and Pete and Mandy. Ray may cause disruption, concern and distress to those close to him but that is only a fraction of the distress his condition causes him. In the end, it is the relationship between the brothers that is central to the film. Pete is long-suffering but, despite all his frustration and resentment, his loving commitment keeps his brother from serious harm.
