Aged Rulon Jeffs is the leader - the prophet - of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) centered in Colorado City, Arizona. His followers believe the prophet is the voice of God. The church espouses polygamy - most specifically men married to several women - as a means of eternal salvation of the highest order. The prophet places the females into marriages, often as soon as they are of child bearing age, which in the eyes of the law is considered child abuse if the female is a minor. Following Rulon's death, his son Warren Jeffs assumes the FLDS leadership as prophet, somewhat against the wants of FLDS council who believed they should vote on who should become leader. Regardless, many of the congregation do follow his word as gospel as their new prophet. But Warren is more reckless in his decisions than his father, with some, including some of the young minor women, questioning his unbending decisions, excommunication often the price for crossing those decisions. He and the church are aware that they are being monitored, most specifically by investigator Gary Engels who would like nothing more than be able to prosecute Jeffs for child abuse and sexual assault, which will require the cooperation of some congregation members who oppose what he is doing and testify in a court of law as to his actions. This is made all the more difficult as FLDS members hold positions of authority within the general population.

Although Lucy is able to effect the type of change she wanted from this position, she finds she cannot deal with George's expectations of her, namely being his primary confidante and advisor at all hours of the day and night, mostly about issues she considers frivolous. As such, she gives him two weeks notice, although she promises to help George find her replacement. As Lucy begins to review resumes, George himself unilaterally decides to hire June Carver, a fellow Harvardite, but who seems to have her sights set on George as both a boss and personal partner. As June begins to replace Lucy in seemingly all aspects of George's life, Lucy begins to realize that she herself has fallen for George. However, Lucy's feelings for George and her attempts to re-ingratiate herself into George's life are placed into jeopardy when she learns of a Wade Corporation decision against her basic sensibilities.

The film discusses a philosophical approach at redemption. The protagonist Manual Jordan has gotten parole from a life sentence for the murder of Abner Easley, and returns to the city he lived in to try to seek redemption. He ends up living and working at a community house run by a preacher, Miles Evans. The film is equipped with beautiful voice-overs about the meaning of life and different philosophies for getting redeemed. Manual also becomes friends with Adele Easley, his victim's sister, in an attempt to make up for what he did. While working at the home he has interactions with Sofia Mellinger, the druggie daughter of a famous singer, struggling with the lack of adult guidance in her life.
