New employee Dany Wilkins reports for her first day on the job and is told that a tracking device is implanted in the base of every Belko employee's skull in case they are kidnapped. This is explained as being common in Colombia due to the high incidences of kidnapping.

Nate has temporarily taken himself off the dating market in focusing on setting up a community center, which he has completed just in time for the foster kids to celebrate Christmas there this year. Late one night as Lauren dozes off working on a last minute work project due in one week on Christmas Eve, she is visited by who she finally comes to understand is the spirit of her first ever boyfriend, a forever fifteen year old Tyler Mirsky, who informs her that she in turn will be visited over the next week by the spirits of three other past boyfriends hoping to show her the errors in her pattern of behavior. While those three boyfriends - Jake, Henry and Logan - are able to show Lauren some of those errors, most specifically her seeming fear of commitment, and the constant of Nate always in the picture, she may not fully realize all the patterns and the consequences of her behavior until she sees the result of both in her and Nate's future.

It's the Christmas season. In taking an ancestry test, Vanessa not only learns her ethnic makeup, but that there is a positive paternal test in the company's system, her biological father being Richard Hendricks, who lives an hour's drive away in Barrington, CT complete with wife Pauline and three teen to adolescent aged children, Caitlin, Aidan and Emilia. Discussing it on both sides and the two eventually meeting, Vanessa accepts Richard's offer for her to come spend a few days with him and his family in Barrington to get to know them before she meets the extended family who will descend on the house on Christmas Eve. The only other person who has been invited for that extended stay at the same time is family friend, New York corporate lawyer Kris who would be able to give Vanessa a lift. Much like Vanessa, Kris is no longer with any biological family after his parents - his father Richard's best friend - passed away when Kris was in college, he having since spent such time with the Hendricks in they being his surrogate family. Getting over some initial jitters and apprehensions on both sides, Vanessa and the Hendricks end up making an emotional connection as family. That connection is threatened by the different experiences Vanessa and Richard had with Vanessa's mother, those unanswered questions which may in turn threaten the burgeoning romantic connection between Vanessa and Kris.
