1964. Cathleen Harris, in her late teens, has resided at the Convent of the Beloved Rose in her home state in the American south for close to two years, first as a postulant for six months, before taking her first vows to become a novice. Unlike the other postulants and novices, Sister Cathleen was raised in a household without religion, let alone Catholicism. As such, her decision to become a nun, which went against her divorced mother's wishes, may be more secure in her mind than her colleagues for which this life course may be more bred within them. The convent is led by the Mother Abbess, Reverend Mother Marie Saint Clare, whose entire life is this convent off of where she not stepped foot in forty years. Reverend Mother believes she is the voice of God within the walls of the convent, and thus does not tolerate any of the sisters questioning her authority. She also believes that the Catholicism which she has known all her life is perfect. When she receives an edict regarding the Second Vatican Council - more commonly referred to as Vatican II - which, opened in 1962 as a process to make the Catholic church more open to modern ideals, she refuses to implement any of the changes, let alone discuss the edict with any of the sisters, especially with the likes of Sister Mary Grace, the Mistress of Postulants and Novices who has more contemporary views of the church. Sister Cathleen's drive to become a nun is set against this backdrop, her process which is not as easy as it appears to the others, and whether she makes it to nun is affected by the Reverend Mother's strict methods and refusal to modernize.

All indication is that man could be Michael Herman, one of her new adult students who ticks off all the proverbial boxes. However, she is surprised is that she is starting to have feelings for Ava's brother, Max Hughes, a landscape architect who has recently returned to town to start work as a groundskeeper at the local conservatory where the Art Festival is being held this year. The surprise for Jamie is that Max has always been a thorn in her side since they were children, he, from what she has heard from Ava, leading a relatively commitment-free life in moving from one thing to another when life gets too tough, Jamie afraid that while he seems to be showing interest in her in return that he may run away if things get too real.

The difficulty for Amy is that she is not an outdoor type person, she lost without her GPS, let alone no trail markers or trails in some cases. However, she sees this assignment as a metaphor of her life as she has felt she has always been chasing waterfalls. At the lodge in the park, she meets one of the tour guides, divorced Mark North, and his eleven year old daughter, Kyra North, of who he shares custody. Mark is known as the person at the lodge that would know the location of the more elusive waterfalls if they do indeed exist. A mutual attraction quickly develops between Amy and Mark, for Amy the complete package that also includes Kyra, which does not sit well with Mark's tour guide colleague Tara, who has always seen herself possibly as the next Mrs. North if given the chance. In the process, Mark is able to share the magic of of the area and its waterfalls and what he knows of those waterfalls in which Amy is specifically interested. A possible further obstacle to a progression in their relationship is if Amy's work assignment, which if she succeeds could mark the next phase of her career, takes precedent, especially in needing to meet Camilla's expectations.
